Wood Rot Repair and Carpentry in Columbia, SC

Fascia and trim wood rot repair painted to match in Columbia, SC by DuVall Painting

Painting over soft or rotted wood only hides the problem for a season. Midlands humidity, shade and clogged gutters keep moisture against fascia, soffits, trim and window sills — and once the wood is soft, a new coat of paint won't stop it. DuVall Painting and Repairs cuts out the damaged wood, replaces it with sound material, then primes and paints so the repair disappears and the house is sealed again. We've been caring for Columbia-area homes since 1988 — 37+ years as the longest-running privately owned painting institution in the region.

Of our 203+ Google reviews, we hold a 4.9 rating — more Google reviews than any other painting company in the Columbia area. Call (803) 446-8863 for a free estimate.

What we repair

  • Fascia boards along the roof edge
  • Soffits and porch ceilings
  • Exterior trim and corner boards
  • Window sills and door frames
  • Siding boards (individual boards that have soft spots or water damage)
  • Porch posts, railings and related porch woodwork

After the carpentry, we prime and paint the new wood to match the surrounding exterior so the fix blends in — not a bare patch next to fresh paint.

Why painting over rot fails in the Midlands

South Carolina heat and humidity, plus tree cover around Irmo, Chapin and many Columbia neighborhoods, keep north walls, shaded eaves and window bottoms damp. Water that sits in gutters, behind failed caulk or under peeling paint softens the wood underneath. A fresh coat seals moisture in for a while, then the paint blisters, the soft spot spreads, and you're painting the same board again. Replacing the damaged wood first — then priming and painting — is the lasting fix.

We don't pretend every soft spot means the whole house is failing. Softwood and early rot are common on older Midlands homes; we look at what's actually damaged, tell you honestly what needs to come out, and leave sound wood alone.

Signs it's time to call

  • Paint that keeps blistering or peeling in the same spot after a recent paint job
  • Wood that feels soft, spongy or crumbly when you press it (fascia edges, sill noses, porch post bases)
  • Dark stains, swelling or cracking along window sills and door bottoms
  • Gaps opening where trim meets siding or where fascia meets the roof edge
  • Soft spots on porch posts, railings or deck-adjacent trim
  • Soffit boards that sag, warp or show water stains from above

If you're already planning exterior painting, it's the right time to fix soft wood before the new paint goes on. For decks and fences with soft boards, see deck & fence staining — board repair is often part of that work too.

Our wood rot repair process

  1. Free estimate. We walk the exterior with you, probe suspect boards, and mark what needs repair versus what just needs prep and paint. No scare tactics — only what's damaged.
  2. Protect. We cover plants, walkways and nearby surfaces as needed and set up safely for ladder and cutting work.
  3. Remove damaged wood. Soft or failed sections of fascia, soffit, trim, sill, siding or porch wood come out cleanly so we're not fastening new material to rot.
  4. Replace and fasten. We install matching boards (or the closest practical match for older profiles), flash or seal where water was getting in, and re-secure surrounding trim.
  5. Caulk and seal. Joints, nail holes and transitions get sealed so moisture doesn't return through the same path.
  6. Prime. New wood gets primed so the finish coat bonds and the repair doesn't flash through.
  7. Paint to match. We finish with Sherwin-Williams coatings (other brands on request) so color and sheen blend with the rest of the house. When we use the paints we recommend, that finish work is covered by our 5-year warranty.
  8. Walk-through and clean-up. We pick up debris, haul off cut wood, and review the repairs with you.

Pair it with exterior painting or staining

Most wood-rot calls come up during an exterior paint estimate — soft fascia, failed sills or a porch post that won't hold paint. Fixing the wood and painting in one project keeps the crew on site and the finish consistent.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can you just paint over soft wood?

We don't recommend it. Soft or rotted wood keeps holding moisture; paint may look fine for a short time, then blister and fail in the same place. Replacing the damaged section first is the lasting approach.

  • How do you tell rot from just old paint?

We probe the wood during the estimate. Sound wood under peeling paint needs scraping, priming and paint. Soft, crumbly or spongy wood needs to come out. We'll show you what we find so you can see the difference.

  • Do you replace whole walls of siding?

Our carpentry focus is repair: individual boards, trim runs, fascia, soffits, sills, frames and porch woodwork. If a large section of cladding needs full replacement, we'll tell you honestly what we can handle and what may need a larger remodel scope.

  • Will the new wood match my house?

We match profiles and dimensions as closely as practical, then prime and paint to the surrounding color so the repair blends in. On older homes, an exact mill match isn't always available; we aim for a finish that looks intentional, not patched.

  • Is the repair covered by your warranty?

Paint work done with the products we recommend is covered by our 5-year warranty. That covers the finish on the repaired areas once they're primed and painted. It is not a structural or lifetime carpentry guarantee.

  • Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. DuVall Painting and Repairs is licensed and insured. A veteran serves on our team (we are not a veteran-owned company). We also offer eco-friendly paint options alongside our standard Sherwin-Williams coatings.

  • What if I only need a few boards fixed?

That's common — and welcome. Small fascia, sill or trim repairs are often done as part of a larger exterior paint job, or as a focused carpentry visit when paint isn't due yet. We'll estimate either way.
