Dock Staining in Columbia, SC & Around Lake Murray

Docks take a harder beating than most decks. Lake Murray sun, splash, humidity and seasonal water-level changes dry boards out, grow mildew in the shade and strip old stain faster than a backyard deck ever will. DuVall Painting and Repairs cleans, repairs and stains docks and lake-house outdoor wood so they look good and last longer. We've been painting and staining Midlands homes since 1988.

Of our 203+ Google reviews, we hold a 4.9 rating — more Google reviews than any other painting company in the Columbia area. Call (803) 446-8863 for a free dock estimate.

What we stain and seal

  • Residential docks and pier walkways
  • Dock floors, stringers and edge boards
  • Railings, benches and dock furniture built into the structure
  • Lake-house decks that sit next to the dock (often done in the same visit)
  • Stairs and ramps down to the water

For inland decks and fences, see our deck & fence staining page.

Signs your dock needs attention

  • Boards have turned gray, silver or black with mildew.
  • Water soaks in instead of beading on the surface.
  • Old stain is peeling, flaking or worn bare in high-traffic paths.
  • Boards are splintering, cracking, cupping or soft underfoot.
  • Nails or screws are popping; fasteners are rusting.
  • Railings feel rough or look faded next to a freshly painted house.

Our dock staining process

  1. Free estimate. We look at the wood, the old finish, access to the water and any boards that need repair, and talk through the color and sheen you want.
  2. Repairs. Loose boards get re-secured, popped fasteners get reset, and badly damaged boards can be replaced.
  3. Cleaning. Dirt, mildew, gray weathered fibers and failing old finish come off so new stain can soak in.
  4. Drying time. Dock wood has to dry before staining. We don't rush this step — especially after rain or high lake humidity.
  5. Sanding and touch-up prep where needed on splinters, raised grain and high-wear spots.
  6. Staining or sealing. Applied evenly to walking surfaces, ends, rails and edges that take splash.
  7. Walk-through and clean-up.

Choosing a stain for lake wood

  • Clear and toner sealers show the most grain, but they need to be redone more often in full sun and splash zones.
  • Semi-transparent stains add color, still show the grain, and are a popular choice for docks and lake decks.
  • Solid stains look closer to paint, hide worn or mismatched boards, and give the most UV protection.

We'll recommend a product based on the age and condition of your wood, how much sun and splash it gets, and how often you want to maintain it. We use Sherwin-Williams stains and will use another brand on request.

Why Lake Murray docks need regular maintenance

Midlands lake wood sits in a tough mix of UV, humidity and wet-dry cycles. Pressure-treated pine and other common dock lumber grays, cracks and invites mildew when left bare. Regular cleaning and staining protects the wood — and the money you spent building or buying the dock — and is far cheaper than replacing boards or whole sections.

Pair it with exterior paint or pressure washing

Many lake-home customers have the dock done at the same time as the house exterior or a full property wash, so everything matches and the crew is already on site. See exterior painting and pressure washing.

Areas we serve

Frequently asked questions

  • Do you only stain docks, or do you repair boards too?

We can re-secure loose boards, reset fasteners and replace damaged boards as part of the job.

  • How often should a Lake Murray dock be stained?

It depends on sun exposure, foot traffic, splash and the type of stain. Horizontal walking surfaces wear faster than railings. We'll look at yours and tell you honestly when it needs it.

  • Can you stain a new dock right away?

New pressure-treated wood usually needs time to dry out before it will take stain well. We can check the moisture and tell you when it's ready.

  • Do you remove old peeling stain?

Yes. Failing finish is cleaned or stripped and sanded as needed before re-staining.

  • Is dock work different from deck staining?

The products and prep are similar, but docks need extra attention to splash zones, access, fasteners near water and drying time. That's why this page is separate from our deck & fence page.

  • Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. DuVall Painting and Repairs is licensed and insured. A veteran serves on our team (we are not a veteran-owned company).

  • What areas do you serve for dock work?

Chapin and Lake Murray homes are a priority, along with Irmo, Lexington, Columbia and nearby Midlands communities.
