Is cabinet painting right for your kitchen?
Painting is a great fit when:
- The cabinet boxes and doors are solid wood or a paintable material and still in good shape.
- You like the layout and just want a new color or a cleaner, brighter look.
- You want to update dark or orange-toned oak, or go to white, gray, navy, green or a two-tone look.
It may not be the best fit when cabinets are water-damaged, falling apart, or made of peeling laminate. We'll tell you honestly when you'd be better off replacing.
Our cabinet refinishing process
Cabinet painting takes more prep than walls, because cabinets get handled every day. Our process:
- Free estimate and color consultation. We look at your cabinets' material and condition and help you pick a color and sheen.
- Protect the kitchen. Countertops, floors, appliances and backsplash are covered.
- Remove doors, drawers and hardware. Everything is labeled so it goes back in the right place.
- Clean and degrease. Kitchen cabinets carry years of cooking grease that keeps paint from sticking, so they get a thorough cleaning.
- Repair and sand. Dings and gouges are filled, and every surface is sanded so the primer bonds.
- Prime. A bonding primer goes on, with a stain-blocking primer on wood that can bleed through.
- Paint. A durable cabinet-grade finish is applied for a smooth result.
- Reassemble. Doors, drawers and hardware go back on, or new hardware if you want it.
- Walk-through and touch-ups.
Products
We use Sherwin-Williams cabinet and trim finishes, made to resist chipping and wipe clean, or another brand on request. Work done with the products we recommend is covered by our 5-year warranty.
How long does it take?
Cabinets need drying and curing time between coats. A typical kitchen takes several days, depending on its size and the number of doors. We'll give you a timeline with your estimate and help you plan around using the kitchen.
Caring for painted cabinets
Painted cabinets keep curing for a few weeks after the job. Go easy at first: wipe them with a soft cloth and mild soap, avoid harsh cleaners, and don't hang damp towels over the doors.
Frequently asked questions
Is painting cabinets cheaper than replacing them?
In most cases, refinishing costs much less than new cabinets and takes less time. We give free written estimates so you can compare.
Will the wood grain show through the paint?
On open-grain wood like oak, some grain texture usually shows.
Can I change the hardware?
Yes. It's a great time to switch, but tell us beforehand if the new pulls need different holes.
Can you paint bathroom vanities too?
Yes. Vanities, built-ins and laundry cabinets.
Can I use my kitchen during the job?
Partly. We'll talk through the schedule so you know when the kitchen will be usable.
What areas do you serve?
