Deck & Fence Staining in Columbia, SC

A wood deck or fence in the Midlands takes a lot: summer sun that dries and grays the wood, humidity and shade that grow mildew, and heavy rain that soaks unprotected boards. Staining and sealing keeps the wood looking good and slows rot, cracking and splintering. DuVall Painting and Repairs has cared for decks, fences and outdoor woodwork since 1988.

Our deck and fence staining process

  1. Free estimate. We look at the wood, the old finish and any damage, and talk with you about the color and look you want.
  2. Repairs. Loose boards get re-secured, popped fasteners get reset.
  3. Cleaning. We remove dirt, mildew, gray weathered fibers and failing old finish so new stain can soak in.
  4. Drying time. Wood has to dry before staining. We don't rush this step.
  5. Sanding and touch-up prep where needed.
  6. Staining or sealing. Applied evenly to boards, ends, rails and spindles.
  7. Walk-through and clean-up.

Choosing a stain

  • Clear and toner sealers show the most wood grain, but they need to be redone more often.
  • Semi-transparent stains add color and still show the grain. This is a popular choice for decks and fences here.
  • Solid stains look closer to paint, hide worn or mismatched wood, and give the most UV protection.

We'll recommend a product based on the age and condition of your wood and how much sun it gets. We use Sherwin-Williams stains and will use another brand on request.

Why maintenance matters in South Carolina

Pressure-treated pine, the most common deck and fence wood in the Midlands, dries out, cracks and grays quickly in our sun when it's left bare. Regular cleaning and staining protects the wood and the money you spent on it, and it's far cheaper than replacing boards or whole fence sections.

Pair it with your exterior paint job

Many customers have the deck or fence done at the same time as their house exterior, so everything matches and the job happens in one visit. See exterior painting.

Frequently asked questions

How often should a deck be stained in South Carolina?

It depends on the sun exposure, the foot traffic and the type of stain. Horizontal deck boards wear faster than fences and railings. We'll look at yours and tell you honestly when it needs it.

Can you stain a new pressure-treated deck right away?

New pressure-treated wood usually needs time to dry out before it will take stain well. We can check the moisture and tell you when it's ready.

Do you remove old peeling stain?

Yes. Failing finish is cleaned or stripped and sanded as needed before re-staining.

Can you stain both sides of a fence?

Yes, as long as we have access to the neighbor's side. You may need to check with your neighbor first.

What's the difference between staining and painting a deck?

Paint forms a film on top of the wood that can peel on walking surfaces. Stain soaks into the wood. For most decks we recommend stain.

What areas do you serve?

Columbia, Lexington, Irmo, Chapin and nearby communities, including lake homes around Lake Murray.
